Green Knights: Overview of Two Games and Some Thoughts

A couple of weekends ago (2?), I had the chance to break out the Green Knights   and get in a few games as the Ringer at the FLGS and their Battleforce Bash. Due to the fact that the store was giving away a lot of prizes and was not charging an entry fee, it was decided that players would need to earn their top four spots and as a result, the "ringer" army played by me was a fully competitive army; one I have and do take to tournaments.
This caused some after game drama, but that is another story for another time.
As for the games, I had two great games and one was a nail biter until round 5.

After Action Report: Green Knights at Kingdom-Con (Part 2)

Okay, after writing up my After Action Report, I noticed that it was insanely long, so I broke it up into two parts.
Part one yesterday, covered my first three games. Part two will cover my last three games and my thoughts on the Green Knights moving forward.

After Action Report: Green Knights at Kingdom-Con (Part 1)

Better late than never at all? I have had this article sitting in a draft status for quite awhile and have just never gotten around to finishing it; with being sick and Malifaux taking off with our gaming group and local community.
However, I guess before it completely become ancient history, I should go ahead and get it posted up...now that I have finished it.
It did turn out longer than I expected, so I had to break it into two seperate posts (1 for today and 1 for tomorrow)
So, without further ado, a wrap-up of my six games at Kingdom-Con and my thoughts and plans moving forward.

Competitive Play and the Casual Gamer

This past weekend I went to Kingdom-Con 2012 and participated in the 6 round 40K tournament held by Reece and the fine crew from Team Zero Comp/Frontline Gaming. Despite the fact in the past 8 weeks I have managed to play a whooping 2 games, I was still looking forward to the tournament and the chances to play 6 games of 40K; quadrupling my games played in the last 2 months. My performance there taught me some interesting about both myself and the nature of competitive play.

2nd Quarter Hobby Goals

It is that time again, to once again look at what exactly I want to accomplish in my hobbies. My first quarter was very schizophrenic due to my Graduate Studies and my preparation for either further Graduate Studies or a Doctoral program. However, I did manage to get some things accomplished despite my erratic flip-flopping.

Green Templars, Green Knights and the 1st Quarter of 2012

Three months of 2012 have flown by with only a few shorts days till the first quarter is complete. Looking back, I have gotten in more 40K that I thought, but it has been in clumps with much of my time being eaten up by my Graduate program. Those three months have passed with two RTT’s and two escalation leagues to show for it; not to mention one of practice games. Not to shabby, but for the most part clusters of games with large patches of thesis writing and portfolio editing. My first quarter hobby can be broken down into Green Knights and Escalation League…which works quite nicely as headings.

After Action Report: Pair-A-Dice Games 2K RTT

Continuing my recent increase in games, I found myself with time available for a day of 40K this past Saturday and the choice of two 40K Tournaments to go to; one in Pasadena at Game Empire (1 hour and 15 minutes away) or one in Vista at Pair-A-Dice Games (1 hour away). Knowing that Dawson from Imperial Vox Cast Podcast (why aren't you listening?) would be there as well as a couple of other players we know, we decided to go to Pair-A-Dice games.

Green Knights: First Two Games

This weekend, I had a last second change of plans and managed to get down to one of the local hobby shops with 3 1/2 hours till they closed. Rushing with a new army is never a good idea, but I figured I might not have a chance to play for a bit with all the real life issues going on...how wrong that prognostication turned out to be...more on that tomorrow. Anyways, I went to a hobby shop we don't usually frequent and I managed to get in two games.
It does seem that I am not the only one to pick up Grey Knights as both of my opponents were Grey Knights and both were played on the following table.

Game One:
Was against a nicely painted classical Grey Knight army that had 3 Shunting Dreadknights in it. I have only ever played against three Dreadknights when I was using Deathwing, so I must admit I underestimate the damage they could cause against a mechanized army with only three little meltaguns.
Sorry for the somewhat blurry pictures here and there, I was in a hurry to get in two games. The game was spearhead deployment with 3 objectives. My opponent deployed as close as he could to the line. My deployment was my first mistake.
While this was my first game, I made one huge mistake. I deployed to close to my opponent which prevented me from getting a round of unmolested shooting off on his army.
He managed to immobilize both blocking Razorbacks and after that I was stuck behind the wall.
By deploying farther back I would have been out of range of his psycannons which I could have neutralized with a round or two of shooting. Even my limited shooting that was aimed at them, took one squad down to 4 guys.
I then made my next mistake which was to panic once he shunted his Dreadknights close and instead of attacking the troops I split the PsyDreads onto the closest Dreadknight which was a mistake as he took just one or two wounds.
The Game ended up with him assaulting into me with the Dreadknights and smashing up my parking lot when his Librarian continually shoot down my psychic powers.
Needless to say I lost.
However, I learned a valuable Lesson: Venerable Dreadnoughts are a horrific tarpit even for Monstrous Creatures and Strength 10 Daemon Hammers.
Game Two:
Second Game was against a Hammer-Slammer GK List with a Librarian and Paladins in a Stormraven backed up by GK Strikes and a Venerable Dread.
I castled up in one corner and threw a single empty razorback on the other flank. This served two purpose, if it was ignored by my opponent, I contested the objective and it gave my walking on acolytes a place to go.
I moved up in Phalanx pushing ahead with the empty razorbacks with the dreads in close support and the DCA in the Chimera on also up front middle right.
I did this to hopefully coax my opponent into moving his Stormraven on in the center of the board to pin him against the terrain.
I manage to blow up one of his transports and immobilize the other. On my opponents turn, his reserves do not come on, so I shift right to hopefully draw him away from all objectives a I don't want to risk getting tied up in the middle with a bunch of contest objectives.
My opponents reserves do not come on (turn 3), so I split some of my forces off to control the central objective and also move out after his. The rest of my forces I keep in a loose front and shoot his squads off the table.
Turn 4 his Storm Raven finally arrives and zooms in front of me while his dreadnought walks on and obliterates one of my regular HS dreads.
I proceed to shoot all the arms off of the dread and immobilize it on his back table edge.
I then explode his Stormraven dropping his Hammer right in front of me.
My opponent is still game and charges into my HS Dread and Razorback which are farther forward that the DCA Chimera or Coteaz Razorback.
I then pile out my DCA squads and after shooting up the Paladins costing them two guys, multi-assault them.
Thanks to Psych-out Grenades, I go first and obliterate the all the Paladins and despite a lot of attacks on the librarian, I am unable to wound him through the staff.
Game ends at the bottom of Five with me holding two objectives.
I still have a lot to learn about Grey Knights with only two games under my belt. However, I am loving the Venerable Dreads.

Green Knights: Oh yes, they are finished!

I could go on and on about the army....which I will....however, for now I will let the pictures do the talking.
Once again, thanks to Granesh!
Hopefully, I will have a battle report with them up by next week!
