Cost Per Point: Month 1 of Building Daemons

I do not know about you, but I have never seen money fall from the sky. I have also not won the lottery or inherited money from a long lost and now dead relative. Therefore, like the vast majority of us, I have to spend my hard earned income on my hobby (addictions). As many of you already know, I am getting back into Warhammer 40,000 after selling off all of my armies. I thought this would be a good time to see just how much it cost to assemble a 2000 point army. This coincides ideally with the fact that our Friendly Local Gaming Store (Thou Shalt Game!) has an escalation league that starts this month and as mentioned previously, the Independent Characters are once again running their Hobby Progress Challenge. I am collecting Daemons this go around, so I started out with collecting the first 750 points that I would need for the Escalation League; needless to say, I was....

...a little shocked at how much those first 750 points cost. Which is what gave me the idea for this series of articles that will calculate the cost of assembling a 2000 point army from scratch. Due to the fact that I sold all of my armies and bits when I took a break from the hobby, I have no bits box to draw from, no pool of collected miniatures I can convert; like most new players I am having to start from scratch. This means that just like a new player who picks up a miniature game for the first time, I am having to start all over again and will have to purchase all the bits and pieces to do any customizing or extras on the army.
The List:
Okay, I have posted this list elsewhere, but for convenience sake, here it is again.

HQ:
Herald of Nurgle on Palanquin with Cloud of Flies (70)
ELITE:
6 Flamers of Tzeentch (138)
6 Flamers of Tzeentch (138)
TROOPS:
5 Plaguebearers (75)
5 Plaguebearers (75)
FAST ATTACK:
5 Screamers of Tzeentch (125)
5 Screamers of Tzeentch (125)
TOTAL:
746 Points

Not a huge army due to the points level and the expensive Elites and Fast Attack; however, it will still require close to a dozen purchases to field. Okay, lets take a look at the purchases that were required this month.

2 Boxes of Plaguebearers (#1)
4 Boxes of Screamers
4 Boxes of Flamers
Package of 40mm Round Bases
Iron Halo Base Inserts
Green Stuff

#1 This purchase will actually help next months goal and therefore reduce the costs next month. However, it had to be purchased this month so I could build a Herald to lead my fledgling Chaos Daemon Force.
I am going to assume that most people know where to purchase their models for at least 20% off; I got mine for 25% off, but I will use 20% for the calculations as I am sure everyone can find that discount at the Warstore or Frontline Gaming.

2 Boxes of Plague Bearers @ $29 dollars each($58)
4 Boxes of Screamers @ $29.75 dollars each($119)
4 Boxes of Flamers @ $20.00 dollars each ($80)
Package of 40mm Bases @ $4.95 dollars ($4.95)
Sub-Total @ 20% off = $209.56
Large Package of Green Stuff @ $7.99 dollars
Iron Halo Base Inserts @ $3.63 for 3
100 Rare Earth Magnets @ $9.99
Total = $231.17

Cost Per Point = $0.31

When you divide the total cost by the number of points in the army, the number is not so scary....Stay tuned next month as we add in the next 250 points.

  1. Interesting note: Extrapolated out, a 2k army will cost $620. It will be interesting to see if that is the case, or if the first 750 points ends up being the cheapest.

    1. We shall see, the next 250 will be more expensive than initially expected due to the fact I need to order a finecast herald.
I am hoping that it stays under $850.
