Escalation League: Month 2 Results
So last week our league had it's second meeting at 500pts. I was up late Friday night finishing up the paint on my Librarian, only to realize afterward that Monster Rain had walked off with my Super Glue after that night's practice games. So I had all my painting done but none of my guys had their jump packs glued on. Not to worry though, I left home early Saturday morning and picked up some glue on the way to the FLGS.
Lowe's FTW!!!

Mags: Month 2 Escalation League
The picture pretty much sums up my month 2 games at Thou Shalt Game's Escalation League. After going 2-0-1 last month with Tyranids, I decided to switch them out for Black Templar due to increase time constraints due to Graduate School and work.
While I think the army will work at higher points levels, having only one scoring troop at 500 (league rules is 1 HQ and 1 Troop @ 500 points), meant I was behind the eight-ball most games; compound this with a rash of 1's for armor saves and I ended up losing two games horribly. I ended up going 0-2-1. So, I at least have a 50/50 record and I am now 2-2-2, this leaves me with 18 points; which is 8 points behind Monster Rain and his league leading 26 points. Dawson from Imperial Vox Cast and our very own Snake-Eyes are both in second place with 24 points. So, it looks like I have some catching up to do.

Weekly To-Do: 2/26/2012 - Paint to Model
This will be a busy week for me as I finally start to paint my Green (Black) Templars. The models arrived late last week, so I barely had time to assemble all of them in time for escalation league...which went horribly for the nascent Green (Black) Templars...more on that tomorrow. I also have to assemble my next 500 points, so I am gonna split the work 50/50 so I can get caught up with the rest of the league members. This week I will be:
- Painting 5 Sword Brethren Terminators
- Assembling 10 AoBR Space Marines
- Paint 6-man Crusader Squad
Short and sweet this week as I need to get to work.

Off to Escalation League Month Two
Well, the entire crew is off to Thou Shalt Game for month two of escalation league today.
The league looks to have actually grown between month 1 and month 2 and we are now at 12 members!
Wish us luck....
...with 11 Models I am going to need it.

Escalation League: Month Two
The second round of games is this weekend and what can I say, I've been a total slacker. Up until Monday I had nothing painted out of my 500pt force. Now I'm in crunch mode trying to get my 12 troopers painted before Saturday. The good news is it's Wednesday AM and I'm a 3rd of the way home.
Since I've been attempting to duplicate the work of several other artists, it's been really slow going trying to get something that approximated what I already had but with a couple of test models down, I think I have something pretty close... so I'm going to run with it. I might get around to posting some comparison model shots before the week is out...

The Wee Budget Green Knights Templar: Getting Started
I do not know about the rest of you, but I am NOT burdened by the weight of my wallet; in fact, it often seems to be very, very light.
Often when I hear people talking about 40K and this or that army, they discuss the cost of fielding and army on the table top.
Taking into consideration the previous two statements, and the fact that I have recently decided to change the army that I will be fielding for our FLGS Escalation League; I decided to take the opportunity to see how cheaply I could field a valid 2K Tournament army.

Weekly To-Do List: 2/18/2012 - The Old Switcheroo
As a father of four, a full time Master's student, and someone who also works 40 hours a week, I have found that the best laid plans often come unraveled not only by unexpected changes, but also overestimating the amount of free time available to someone during the course of any given week. The later problem has caused me to reevaluate my army for the escalation league. Throw in the fact that we are moving into a bigger house end of April and the fact that my Thesis is also due this semester and I had the makings of a big fat fail.

After Action Report: Pair-A-Dice Games 2K RTT
Continuing my recent increase in games, I found myself with time available for a day of 40K this past Saturday and the choice of two 40K Tournaments to go to; one in Pasadena at Game Empire (1 hour and 15 minutes away) or one in Vista at Pair-A-Dice Games (1 hour away). Knowing that Dawson from Imperial Vox Cast Podcast (why aren't you listening?) would be there as well as a couple of other players we know, we decided to go to Pair-A-Dice games.

TTW Presents: The Angels of Death
It seems my beloved Eagle Warriors have come full circle, the Buyer I had backed out of our deal and they have once again been returned to my possession. It's not a bad thing really, I had already come to miss my Bikes so I was glad to take them back. However, just prior to their return I had decided to acquire Mags' Deathwing army. Since he was moving on to Grey(Green) Knights, I really had no desire to collect the same army as him so we worked out a deal where I would get his Deathwing and he would take a majority of my Grey Knights boxes off of my hands.

Mags: Month 1 Escalation League
Month one of escalation league is done. Snake-Eyes has already posted up his review/batreps of the event, which you can read here. As the purpose of this escalation league was to get people to paint there armies and hopefully bring in some new players, I decided to go with Tyranids because I figured no one else would play them. I was wrong! We currently have an 8 player league which is the perfect size to get games done with minimal amount of organizational headache. Here is the armies we currently have:
- Tyranids
- Tyranids - Magilla Gurilla
- Necrons - Monster Rain
- DoA Blood Angels - Snake-Eyes
- Deathwing -Dawson IVC
- Imperial Guard - mainly foot
- Orks
- Chaos Space Marines

Weekly To-Do List: 2/5/2012 - A Hive Guard Question
So, last week I was able to complete all of my hobby to-do list....well, almost...
....I am still painting up my Tervigon as it is taking me longer than expected due to the size of the model. He does have all the base colors on him and I am basically down to adding red (horrible color to paint) and detailing his head...so I am close.
I did manage to assemble all of the gaunts I will need for this month and next month, so I am slightly ahead of the game in that respect.
Speaking of next month and the increase to 1000 points. I am having a difficult time deciding what to do about my Hive Guard. Here are my ideas:

Speaking of next month and the increase to 1000 points. I am having a difficult time deciding what to do about my Hive Guard. Here are my ideas:
- Use Tyranid Warriors to represent them: I have seen a lot of people do this.
- Use GW Hive Guard: Might try and pick up some cheap on ebay.
- Use Ravener models: I have been thinking about doing something similar to what most people do with Tyranid Warriors, but instead use Ravener models. As Raveners do not even have the option for Venom Cannons, no one will mistake them for warriors and it is not a conversion you see often. I will admit this is the direction I am leaning.
I have very modest hobby goals this week.
- Finished Tervigon
- Base Coat 12 Gaunts
If I can get both of these done this week, I will be ahead of the game and hopefully able to finish up the needed Genestealer next week and able to move on to next months goals. Pictures up soon.
Disqus Removed
I have removed Disqus from the blog.
After making the blog mobile device friendly, I found that Disqus did not show up on the mobile version of the blog and comments posted via the mobile version were on Bloggers response section. As these comments were only visible via mobile, I removed Disqus so all comments would use the same program.
Due to the fact the blog got a reboot due to data loss anyways, I figured doing it now only lost us a few comments.

Podcast Spotlight: Deepstrike Radio
When I first envisioned
this series of articles, I had just finished listening to episode 28 of
Deepstrike Radio and I was so impressed with their two most recent episodes
that I just had to sit down and write a detailed review to get the word out
about a Podcast that had really kicked it into overdrive and was producing a
very high quality show. However, I was behind on my Podcasts due to a recent
plethora of audio books and dramas I had acquired and by the time I had written
my review, episode 29 had dropped. After listening to episode 29 I was ready to
just scrap the whole idea. Much like the dreaded second album of a fantastic
new band, episode 29 was a massive step backwards for a Podcast that I truly
felt was making great positive gains forward. After several days of wrangling
with myself, I decided to go ahead and move forward with my review; however,
much like Deepstrike radio’s recent Podcasts, my review will have a split
personality. On one hand we have my initial glowing review of episodes 27 and
28 and then we have my rather harsh criticism of episode 29.
Making the Big Time:
Wow, just wow! I do not
know how else to describe the last two episodes of Deepstrike Radio. While this
show has had its bumps and bruises, it has been steadily making progress in
terms of quality and production. However, with episodes 27 and 28, this show
has made a tremendous leap forward. I have been a long time listener of the
show and during that time I enjoyed the Librarius; I like listening to the crews’
perspective on a particular army or event from 40K. However, with their two
most recent episodes (27 and 28), the crew has hit a home run with not only the
Librarius, but from start to finish.
For those not familiar
with Deepstrike Radio, it is a Podcast that focus on the lore and background of
40K and how to bring that lore alive on the table top. It is easily labeled as
a fluffy Podcast, but I tend to thing of it as a hobby Podcast. Each week the
crew delves into an army or action of note in the 40K universe and after
sharing the kernels of knowledge they have gleamed from the data slates, they
make an army list focusing on that particular army, faction, or event. Not
content to sit on their proverbial laurels, the crew then discusses how to make
that army a reality on the table top with discussions on paint schemes, add on
kits and bits, and basing to really get the feel of the army or event
represented on the gaming table.
Episodes 27 and 28 were
pure gold. The crew smoothly covered both the Blood Ravens and the Gothic War
in these episodes. They not only provided a detailed background for each topic,
but they also detailed out each topics timeline in a succinct manner that stay
focused and provide a wealth of knowledge. The Podcast goodness continued into
The Armory section wherein Chris and Big Jim deliver army lists that really
highlight and expanded upon the chosen topic. To me the boys really went all
out trying to really pick an army that “fit the fluff” and yet remained
competitive.
To be fair and balanced,
every review needs to have either a negative or something that could have been
better. In this case, I would really like to see the boys of Deepstrike Radio
provide some sort of transitional music or sound bite between the various
segments.
All in all, I give
episodes 27 and 28 a solid Leadership 9 Stubborn rating. Keep up the great work
guys!
Three Steps Forward and then Two Back:
After the previous two
Podcasts, I strongly felt that this Podcast was on the verge of joining the
proverbial pantheon of Podcasts with the 11th Company, 40KUK, and
the Independent Characters. How things can change with just one episode. The
most recent episode (episode 29) has dragged the crew of Deepstrike radio back
to the ranks of airwave mediocrity. Unlike the previous two episodes, episode 29
lacked any form of cohesion heard in the previous two Podcasts episodes;
episodes in which the crew played off of each other and smoothly flowed from
one idea or concept to another. Two things in this episode were particular
jarring: the Librarius and host interaction.
The Librarius after
episodes 27 and 28 had become one of my favorite segments of the show. I
enjoyed the hosts’ overview of the various armies, their walk through time as
they detailed out the armies actions of note. All of that was missing in
episode 29. Unlike the previous two episodes, the coverage of Ulthwe felt
unfinished, unfocused, and above all superficial. This is not only a long
standing Craftworld in 40K lore, but it also has the birth place of one of the
galaxies most notorious psychic meddlers. As a long time Eldar player, I was
really looking forward to this segment. Instead, this segment left a bitter
taste in my mouth as it barely highlighted an Eldar Craftworld that has been in
more codices than any other, with such notable appearances as the Eye of Terror
book and Craftworld Eldar.
Unlike episodes 27 and 28,
in which the hosts played off one another to improve the flow of the show, the
listener could almost feel the tension that was evident in the audio of this broadcast.
This tension was not unnoticed by the cast; first one, then another of the
members alternated taking turns at playing peace keeper to head off rising
tensions. Tensions that were very obvious to a long time listener of the show;
tensions that in my opinion dragged the entire episode down from start to
finish, and caused the shows previous harmonious flow to falter and then just
fall down.
I do not know how to fix
the problem, but I can locate the source of my dissatisfaction: Chase. In one
episode since his reintroduction to the Podcast, Chase’s juvenile antics have
not only stopped Deepstrike Radio’s forward progress, but they have actually
dragged down an informative and narrative Podcast. Of particular scorn worthy
attention is Chase’s list for The Armory section, which had nothing to do with
the fluff of Ulthwe; for a Podcast that prides itself on bringing the lore of
40K alive on the tabletop, this was the proverbial sore thumb. While both of
the other cast members made lists that prominently featured Guardians and
limited Aspect warriors, Chase’s list was simply an amalgamation of units he
liked or thought would do well on the table top. In my opinion, this show was
both better in both informative and production quality when it was a two man show
with just Big Jim and Chris; how I yearn for the days of episode 27 and 28.

Podcast Spotlight: An Introduction
Lately, I have been painting and listening to a bunch of podcasts. Unlike television or a movie, they do not distract me to the point that I lose focus on what I am painting. EvilEd209 has done a wonderful job providing a nice summary of which podcasts are out each week and what they are about.
However, he does not provide a detailed review (probably due to the fact he listens to so many podcasts at once) of any one podcast. In my academic career, I often have to provide critical reviews on printed and visual media and I thought that maybe I could do this with a podcast now and then. This will by no means be a regular weekly series, but more of an article from time to time when a particular podcast does something noteworthy or newsworthy. The first article will be up this Friday.
EDIT: Since writing this lead in for my article on Friday, I have made a change and will be reviewing a podcast that is of particular interest and importance to me. This review is in light of recent changes to that podcast which I felt hurt its rapidly improving format and presentation. This has been a hard decision for me because one of the cast members of the podcast I am going to review is a close personal friend of mine and many of my upcoming comments are critical in nature.
